NRLW PATHWAYS EXPLAINED — The Truth Behind Pathways (2026)

Featuring: Vanna Siapo Suani

Pathways has become one of the most overused, misunderstood words in the NRLW space.

Parents say it. Coaches say it.

Clubs promote it.But very few actually understand what pathways really means… or what it takes to move through it.

Today, I’m breaking down the real pathway, from grassroots → NRLW, without the sugar-coating. To understand how we structur and guide athletes through this journey, explore our female rugby leage pathways accross Australia and New Zealand.

1. Grassroots Footy – Where It Truly Begins

This is where raw talent first shows. This is where habits form. This is where consistency matters more than highlights.

You don’t get noticed for scoring 5 tries.

You get noticed for:

  • Your work rate

  • Your effort areas

  • Your attitude

  • Your resilience

  • Your ability to stay switched on

  • Your habits on and off the ball

Most girls who get scouted didn’t ask to be watched — their football simply demanded attention.

2. The First Step Up – District Pathways Programs

Depending on where you live, pathways begin with your district:

  • Canterbury-Bankstown → Bulldogs

  • Western Suburbs / Campbelltown → Tigers

  • Penrith & Greater West → Panthers

  • South / ACT → Raiders, etc.

Girls may be invited or recommended to trial.Coaches and club scouts start taking notice.

From here, players enter the START of the real pathway.

3. Lisa Fiaola Cup (U16–17)

Bottom age: 16

Top age: 17

This is the true development phase.

What clubs look for:

  • Shape

  • Strength

  • Speed

  • Coachability

  • Fitness

  • Game IQ

  • Repeat efforts

  • Attitude under pressure

This is the “foundation years.”

4. Tasha Gale Cup (U18–19)

Bottom age: 18

Top age: 19

A massive jump in:

  • Contact

  • Pace

  • Physicality

  • Structure

  • Professional expectations

Some girls go from Tasha → Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership, while a small few go straight into NRLW systems.

Only consistency gets you there.

5. Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership (Open Age)

This is where women become athletes.

  • Faster

  • Stronger

  • Harder contact

  • More structured

  • More accountable

You can be:

  • A normal squad member

  • A train-and-trial

  • A development player

  • An NRLW-ready standout

This is where Excel Sports prepares most girls for their NRLW jump.

6. NRLW Development, Supplementary & Top-24 (2025–2027)

2025 structure:

  • 4 Development players

  • 0 Supplementary

  • 24 Top-24

2026 structure:

  • 3 Development players

  • 2 Supplementary players

  • 24 Top-24

  • Supplementary players: paid per game, act as extended bench

2027 (expected):

  • 2 Development

  • 3 Supplementary

  • 24 Top-24

Pathways are evolving every year. The opportunities are opening — but expectations are rising.

7. Schools, State, & Representative Programs

Alongside club pathways:

  • NSW Schoolgirls

  • Queensland Schoolgirls

  • Under 19 Origin

  • Open Women’s Origin

  • National School comps

  • Koori / Samoa / Tonga rep programs

They all support pathway progression — but they are not substitutes for consistency at club level.

8. What True Pathway Progression Looks Like

It’s not:

❌ Highlights

❌ Popularity

❌ Try scoring

❌ Playing for a “big” club

❌ Being in the right circle

❌ Looking good on social media

It’s:

✔ Consistency

✔ Intent

✔ Habits

✔ Coachability

✔ Fitness

✔ Body shape development

✔ Mental toughness

✔ Game awareness

✔ Effort areas under fatigue

Pathways reward those who stay relentless.

9. What Scouts (Like Us at Excel Sports) Really Look For

You mentioned it clearly in your voice notes — this is it:

  • Resilience

  • Habits during the game

  • How you respond when tired

  • Are you coachable?

  • Do you stay switched on?

  • Do you run with purpose?

  • Are you an option runner?

  • Do you look like you’re getting the ball even when you aren’t?

  • Do you monitor the opposition?

  • Do you track back in defence?

  • Do you compete?

I have girls I scout for 12 months…And girls I scout for 24 months…And girls I know instantly.

Nothing is luck. Everything is earned.

10. The Excel Sports Pathway Philosophy

We do not push players into NRLW too early.

A contract means nothing if you aren’t ready.

We want:

  • 5-year careers

  • 8-year careers

  • 10-year careers

We don’t want 1-year players who disappear.

We develop girls correctly, not quickly.

11. Myths Parents Believe (The Truth Behind Them)

A few major ones:

❌ “If she scores tries, she’ll get picked.”

Absolutely not.Process > Tries.

❌ “She needs to be at a big club.”

Wrong.She needs the right club.

❌ “If she didn’t make rep footy at 16–17, she’s done.”

False.I have 21–24-year-olds getting signed.

❌ “Scouts don’t watch club games.”

Maybe others don’t.But we do.

❌ “One bad season ruins you.”

Only if your mindset is wrong.Growth seasons are not wasted seasons.

Conclusion

Pathways are real.

The opportunity is real.

But the sacrifices, consistency, and mindset needed are even more real.

This blog is designed to cut through the noise and explain exactly what parents and players must understand before chasing the NRLW dream.
