Today we went out and watched Tayla Peters play a crucial role in the Dragons’ league win against the Manly Sea Eagles.

An enjoyable game, but more importantly, a moment that will be remembered.

With her grandparents flying in from New Zealand and close family friends there to support her, it made the occasion even more special—especially with her parents currently away on work holidays.

This is what sport is about. Family. Sacrifice. Moments.

Today I had the privilege of watching the Tasha Gale Cup clash between Parramatta Eels and Manly.

Scoreline aside, what stood out wasn’t the result… it was the development system at Parramatta.

The structure, the detail, the rotations, the different attacking shapes and combinations — that’s what real pathways look like. New halves pairing, fresh combinations, players stepping into roles… it was exciting to watch from a development perspective.

This is how you build long-term athletes, not just short-term wins.

Proud moment for me personally as well, having four of my girls out there competing.

Irae Savea — wow.
Bottom age, and in my opinion, the best fullback in the Tasha Gale competition right now. Her performance today was elite. Composure, vision, positioning… she’s gone to another level.

Mitszi Cairns — first real full game and she didn’t disappoint. Strong, composed, and only scratching the surface. Watch her next year.

Sammy-Lee Gunn — natural, instinctive 5/8. What stood out most today was her confidence. You can’t teach that. She just plays what she sees… and that’s rare.

Seeing Irae and Sammy combine… that’s something special.

And to think, both from Victoria.

I said it today and I’ll say it again — I truly believe I’ve got some of the best talent coming out of Victoria, and I’m grateful to be part of their journey.

Moments like this aren’t about hype… they’re about appreciating the work, the development, and the future of the female game.

Sometimes you see a player and immediately know there is something there. I only recently got a glimpse of Mitszy and what stood out straight away was raw talent — solid, powerful in attack and dominant in defence. The more we looked, the clearer it became that this young athlete has a massive future ahead of her.

Currently playing bottom age Tarsha Gale for the Parramatta Eels, Mitszy is developing in a strong system, but what excites us most is the next level we believe she has in her with the right mentorship and guidance.

Mitszy has been playing rugby league since 8 years old and is known as a quiet, low-key achiever — naturally athletic and happy to let her football do the talking.

She has shown great versatility, spending most of her junior years in the centres, moving into the second row, and this season continuing to develop towards front row — a reliable player who will do whatever the team needs.

Representative & pathway highlights include:
• Aotearoa NZ Māori Rugby League Kōtiro U15’s – Te Whānau o Tainui
• NSW Māori Harmony 9’s U16 – 2 Years

Late last year we received a message from a very trusted contact in New Zealand.

After watching Jayne’s footage, it was clear she had something special — natural ability, toughness and determination.

But the real moment came when we sat down with Jayne and met her parents.

Some athletes talk about work.
Others just do it.

We’ve been working with Zakiah Jenkins for nearly two years now, and from the very first time we saw her play, we knew there was something special.

Zakiah came through the Goannas before we spotted her playing for the Rams, where she co-captained the side with Alanah O’Loughlan and helped lead them to a Country Lisa Fiola Cup Grand Final victory.

We were tipped off to keep an eye on her — the granddaughter of legendary referee Willie Barnes — but it only took one look to see the talent.

Speed.
Agility.
Toughness.

What impresses us most isn’t just her football though.

Zakiah is a country kid who keeps things simple. No hype. Just hard work. She lives for fitness, sticks to her routines, and treats training like a responsibility — not an option.

With the support of her mum Natalie and her proud pop Willie, she made the move into the Penrith system, and continues to grow stronger every season.

This year she’s playing hooker, bringing speed, energy and crisp passing to the game while continuing to build her strength and confidence.

At Excel Sports, we are incredibly proud of the player and person she is becoming.

A few weeks ago I came across a young player who immediately caught my attention — Rihanna Petelo.

You can tell Rihanna is still relatively new to rugby league, but the way she plays tells you everything about her character. She plays for the team, buys into the culture, and has a genuine hunger to improve.

But what impressed me most wasn’t just her football.

When I met her parents Mikaele and Melaia, it became very clear where Rihanna gets her grounding from. They are incredible people who live by strong family values and faith.

During our conversation I asked Rihanna a simple question:

“What is most important to you?”

Without hesitation she said:

“Being a better person and adding value to my life.”

That answer absolutely blew me away.

Very rarely does a young athlete start there.

But when someone does, you know you’re dealing with a special human being.

We discovered Mia this year while she was playing Rugby League in the Lisa Fiola Cup for the Newcastle Knights.
We have players scattered across different clubs, but Mia was one we simply couldn’t ignore.
