Fans Don’t Build Teams — So Why Are They Trying to Pick Them? (NRL Coaching Decisions)

This Is Something That Doesn’t Sit Right With Me - Especially when it comes to NRL Coaching decisions
This is something that really eats me up.
And I know I’m in the minority.
Because right now, it feels like 99% of fans are quick to jump on the bandwagon — quick to agree with whatever noise is loudest on social media.
Quick to:
tear down a player
question a coach’s credentials
criticise a club’s direction
All from the outside… with no real understanding of what goes into NRL coaching decisions.
A Club Is Bigger Than Your Opinion
Let’s get something straight.
A professional rugby league club is not just a team sheet.
It’s a full organisation:
Board
Chairman
CEO
Recruitment staff
Wellbeing managers
Medical teams
Coaching staff
👉 It’s a system.
And yet one fan — with no experience — can make noise, and others jump on.
👉 That noise can damage reputations with zero credibility.
Noise Without Credibility Is Dangerous
This is what people don’t want to talk about.
There is real damage in this:
Players get torn down
Coaches get labelled
Clubs get questioned
All based on opinions…
👉 not facts
👉 not structure
👉 not understanding
And most of it comes from people with no education in NRL coaching decisions.
You Don’t Just Become a First-Grade Coach
A first-grade coach has:
done years of apprenticeship
worked through systems
earned that role
👉 It is not easy to get there.
So to be booed… criticised… or called to be sacked after a short time?
👉 That’s offensive.
The Moment a Team Starts Losing… Everything Changes
The moment a team starts losing:
fans turn
social media fills up
“drop this player”
“sack the coach”
👉 One loss doesn’t change the ladder.
💣 It changes the noise.
Two, three, four, five losses?
People forget:
it might be last year’s roster
it might be inherited systems
it takes time to build
👉 That’s where real NRL coaching decisions come into play.
Everyone Has an Opinion — But Not Everyone Has Understanding
Watching ≠ knowing
Supporting ≠ understanding
Emotion ≠ strategy
👉 Just because you watch the game doesn’t mean you understand how teams are built.
There Is a Process — Whether You See It or Not
Every coach operates with:
KPIs
targets
structured plans
👉 3-year plan
👉 5-year plan
They must:
sell a vision
build a roster
meet milestones
If they don’t?
👉 They get moved on.
That’s how NRL coaching decisions work.
But That Decision Doesn’t Belong to Fans
No fan has the right:
to pick a team
to call selections
to demand sackings
👉 Decisions should be based on performance — not pressure.
Coaches Aren’t Picking Teams for One Game
This is where people get it wrong.
Coaches are:
building systems
managing players
thinking long-term
👉 You’re watching one game
👉 They’re managing a season — and beyond
That’s real NRL coaching decisions.
You’re Judging Moments — They’re Managing Development
Take Lockie Galvin.
People say:
👉 “He’s not a seven.”
But a coach plays him there.
Why?
👉 He’s the best option right now
👉 He’s capable
👉 He fits the system
And people forget:
👉 He’s 19 years old.
You’re Expecting a Finished Product — He’s Still Developing
He’s not:
Andrew Johns
Cooper Cronk
👉 and he’s not meant to be yet.
With the right guidance:
👉 he could develop into something close to a Reece Walsh style player
But that takes:
time
development
patience
So Why Are Fans Putting Pressure on Him?
Fans think they know better.
But:
coaches
recruitment staff
development teams
👉 understand the game at a higher level.
That’s what drives NRL coaching decisions — not opinions.
Social Media Pressure Is Out of Control
Instagram comments
Facebook opinions
public pile-ons
Calling for sackings?
👉 That’s emotion, not logic.
And Some of It Crosses the Line
Threats. Abuse.
Even if they’re empty threats…
👉 You are not a fan if you say things like that.
Clubs Know More Than You Think
Do you really think clubs don’t know what’s going wrong?
👉 They review
👉 They adjust
👉 They work behind the scenes
Constantly.
This Isn’t About Defending Clubs — It’s About Reality
I’m not here defending clubs.
I’ve been critical — especially around wellbeing.
But this is about truth.
Clubs Have Responsibility — But So Do Fans
Clubs must:
choose the right coach
set KPIs
demand results
Coaches must deliver.
👉 No excuses.
But Fans Don’t Override the Process
If a coach is replaced:
👉 it must come from performance
👉 not pressure
Because These Are Real People
Coaches have:
families
kids
emotions
👉 This isn’t just a job.
The Reality Most People Don’t Want to Accept
👉 Coaches are qualified
👉 Systems are planned
👉 Decisions are not random
That’s the truth behind NRL coaching decisions.
You Were Never Meant to See the Full Picture
👉 You don’t see everything
👉 and you never will
Because the real work happens behind the scenes.
You’re Not Building a Team From the Couch
👉 You’re reacting to moments
👉 They’re building something bigger
An Opinion Doesn’t Equal Authority
Being a fan does not mean:
you’re qualified
you understand systems
you should influence decisions
This Is a Business — Not a Comment Section
Clubs are businesses.
When winning:
👉 fans celebrate
When losing:
👉 fans turn
👉 That doesn’t make sense.
This Is Personal
I follow the Bulldogs.
Grew up with:
Belmore Oval
pots and pans in the street
loving the game regardless
That’s what being a fan meant.
You Can Disagree — But There’s a Line
I don’t agree with everything.
But I will refuse to:
call for sackings
publicly question roles
Because I understand accountability exists.
Fans Don’t Decide Careers
👉 Performance decides that
👉 KPIs decide that
Not comments.
Support Means Support
Support your team.
Not destroy it.
Everyone’s an Expert — Until Things Go Wrong
When losing:
👉 everyone becomes an expert
But no one sees behind the scenes.
Before You Speak — Think About This
That player or coach is:
👉 someone’s child
👉 someone’s parent
👉 someone’s family
Final Reality Check
Before you post…
💣 “I hope it’s never your family being spoken about like that.”
Feel free to voice your opinion but “Note that this is mine.”
